INVERARY, Ont. (July 17, 2018) – Danny O’Brien returned to action with a big doubleheader last weekend in the final two races of the Border Battle Series where he scored his sixth win and earned his 11th and 12th top-five finishes of the season on Saturday at Brockville Ontario Speedway.
The weekend started with another Friday night trip to Can-Am Speedway in Lafargeville, NY for the third race of the Can-Am/Brockville Border Battle Series. O’Brien drove to a fifth-place finish in the main event.
“I started sixth, but I got out wide going into turn three on the first lap and lost a bunch of spots,” O’Brien explained. “I think we fell in line about 11th. After a couple of restarts, we were back up to fourth and had a good race with Mat Williamson. That’s as far as we were going to get and we ended up fifth.”
O’Brien was happy with his car’s performance against the very talented field and felt he may have been able to race into a podium finishing spot if not for the early slip up.
“The car was good,” O’Brien recounted I think we had a top-three car. I don’t know that we were going to catch Billy Dunn. He was pretty good, so I think he was going to win either way.”
On Saturday, O’Brien was back at his familiar stomping grounds at Brockville Ontario Speedway. After timing second quick in his group and finishing second in his heat, O’Brien lined-up third in the main event and quickly jumped forward to take the lead on lap three.
“The outside was the place to be,” O’Brien said. “The inside was okay, but it wasn’t enough to pass somebody that was right around the outside. Once we got the lead, I made it to lapped traffic and I was able to hold on, but Ryan Arbuthnot was right with me the whole race.”
O’Brien held off Arbuthnot throughout the 35-lap event to score his fourth win of the season at Brockville and sixth overall. It was also his third win in as many weeks at Brockville as the driver of the 1000 Islands RV Centre No.17d has found a setup that works and he attributes a lot of that to a consistent track.
“Brockville is one of the few tracks we go to that’s very consistent,” O’Brien said. “No matter what the weather is, they do a good job and keep it almost the same every week. Unless we get a really humid night that makes it heavier, we have a pretty consistent racing surface there. It makes it good for everybody because you kind of know what you’ve got before you get there.”
The final checkered flag on Saturday night closed the inaugural Border Battle Series at Can-Am. Despite his win, O’Brien finished second in the four-race mini-series standings.
“We were six points behind going into Saturday night and we lost it by two points,” O’Brien explained. “Arbuthnot was good enough. He was right on my bumper the whole time in lapped traffic and I saw the nose a couple of times. We never really got away from him. We have no complaints though. The car was good.”
O’Brien plans to return to action with another doubleheader with a trip to Can-Am on Friday night before returning to Brockville on Saturday. For more information, visit www.dannyobrien.ca.
